No, we’re not talking about X-Men: Apocalypse. If that movie was set in space I’d be shocked that we’d be just now getting that news. No, I’m talking about the one after that. The one we aren’t seeing in 2 weeks from now. When talking with Fandango , Bryan Singer gave us a bit more insight into the next X-Men film coming down the pipeline.
“That was something Simon [Kinberg] and I discussed a long time ago, all the way back to when I first pitched the studio on First Class — that they do each movie in 10-year increments,” Singer explains when asked about the ‘90s setting. “It’s a nice way for the audience to kind of keep track of the timeline, and it’s fun to play in these different eras. So that’s a good starting point.” He continues, “But we’ve also introduced the tenants of time travel, which already exists in the comic book. Also I imagine – and this is the first time I’ve actually answered the question this way – but another thing that’s been introduced in the comics is a big alien, interstellar tenant within the X-Men universe that hasn’t been explored. And to me, that might be kind of fun because I’m a huge Star Wars and Star Trek fan, and exploring the X-Men universe and being able to utilize that would be exciting, visually. “
So this movie is the same movie Simon Kinberg said would be set in the 90’s (you can check that out here). So if this is referring to the coming New Mutants movie, then it’ll for some reason be set in space. Fandango theorizes that the thing Singer is alluding to is the Dark Pheonix storyline, which is not only a classic ( according to Wikipedia) but it spends a lot of its story in space. However, if this is the route they’re taking then this news is probably for the next actual X-Men movie than its spin-off New Mutants.
So what do you think? You ready to see the Dark Pheonix storyline really done? Many movies have taken elements from it but none have really done the story completely. Or do you not care? Talk about it in the comments and don’t forget to like, share, and follow Sprom for more info on this 90’s space X-Men movie and more in the world of movie news.
X-Men: Apocalypse comes to theaters May 27th of this year. New Mutants doesn’t currently have a release date but is expected to start shooting in early 2017.
