The late 90s and early 2000s were an interesting time for the average comic book nerd. The comic book film industry that we know of today started off with the Blade and X-Men films. But those were a bit … dark. Cool but not the most kid friendly. And then along came our friendly neighborhood Spiderman. In 2002 Tobey Maguire stole our hearts and made us believe in superheroes. And now it is close to 15 years later and Peter Parker is at it again, but this time in the form of 19 year old British actor Tom Holland.
As seen is his debut in Captain America: Civil War , this Spidey definitely gives us a new look at the so beloved character. Tom Holland’s Spiderman is only a freshman in high school(that’s 9th grade for anyone who doesn’t use this naming system), while all the previous cinematic iterations showed Peter late in his high school years and beyond. Not to mention when Tobey first started he was 26, which is old even for a senior. Marvel is said to be going to a cast closer to the ages we pretend they are, which is always refreshing. It’s always nice seeing people who act my age actually be near my age. And this news just makes me all the more refreshed.
Michael Barbieri (I really dig that last name) has been cast in Spiderman: Homecoming as one of Peter’s pals. And not only is Michael a very small looking and thin child, but he is also 14. He is literally the exact age as the average high school freshman. While Barbieri’s character is said to be a fresh one created by the people behind the MCU, according to comicbook.com it is being said that Barbieri’s character is going to be based on Ganke from the Ultimate Spiderman line. These are the comics where Miles Morales is Spidey currently. Ganke is described as a superhero lover and super optimistic. While I am unfamiliar with this actor he seems like a kid who could play this part.
He still technically doesn’t have a name and we don’t know how big his role will be in the coming film, but I don’t think he’ll be anyone too big. While he will be Pete’s friend, child actors are forced by law to work less each day. That’s one reason why studios can be more reluctant to hire minors in their films. But it seems to me like Michael Barbieri will be a great addition to the Homecoming cast. Remember: there are no small parts, only small actors.
But what do you think? Are you ready for a Marvel film with a “John Hughes-y feel”? Does is annoy you when grown adults play kids? Talk about it in the comments and don’t forget to like, share, and follow Sprom for more Spiderman: Homecoming news and for other things in the world of movie news.
Spiderman: Homecoming comes to theaters July 7th, 2017. But if you just can’t wait that long for this new Spidey, Civil war is still in theaters. Go for a rewatch. I’m sure they’d love the extra $10.
