Box Office Breakdown 7/15- 7/17

It is a new week and with a new week comes a new box office breakdown! Lets see who beat who in the box office this week?

#5 – Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates

In the number five slot this weekend is the raunchy Summer comedy Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. Adding a good $7.7 million to its total of $31.5 million, the Zac Efron/Adam Devine led comedy has beat many a critic’s expectations. While the Rotten Tomatoes score is a very sad 39% the audience score is almost twice that with 67%. This is likely because of it’s fun cast and the fact that until this week this was the only comedy marketed to adults. But I do doubt we will be seeing Mike or Dave come next weekend.

#4 – Finding Dory

Another Pixar masterpiece, Finding Dory slides down to number four this weekend with $11.3 million. This brings the sequel’s total up to an astounding $445.7 million. Who’d think that a movie about a fish searching for her parents would become the highest grossing animated movie domestically? But if you saw the movie you know it deserves it. A fun family film with a heartfelt message and amusing characters. Not to mention it rips your heart out better than almost any Pixar film. It’s top three easy. Not quite Up sad, but pretty damn close.

#3 – The Legend of Tarzan

Just beating out the new Pixar classic by a mil, Legend of Tarzan has landed in the number three slot with $11.4 in its third week. This brings Tarzan up to 103.3 mil, which is bad but better than I and many others expected. The trailers weren’t super impressive and this looked like something that would easily get beat out by every other Summer blockbuster. However it sort of held its own. I mean it hasn’t broken even with its domestic total or anything but I expected worse. So good job?

#2 – Ghostbusters

The remake of the beloved 80’s classic of the same name comes in second this weekend with $46 million. The all female remake of the original film starring Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig, and Leslie Jones has been met with scrutiny since the beginning. Some had valid concerns (example: Ghostbusters is a classic don’t remake it) and some had some not so valid concerns (example: Women Ghostbusters?!? Screw that!), but it happened. It has been met with a lot of “That did not suck as much as I thought it would”s, but it has a 74% on Rotten Tomatoes. The real question is if this is enough to warrant a sequel. Only time will tell when it comes to that, but fingers crossed!

#1 – The Secret Life of Pets

And the winner of this week’s box office battle is The Secret Life of Pets with a solid $50.8 million in its second week. The new fun family comedy on the block just showed up the new Ghostbusters in its first week! With a total over $200 mil on a $75 million dollar budget, this is proof that Illumination is really making a name for itself in the animation game. While its no Pixar it’s hard to deny that this is the start of something great. I’m happy to get to follow this from the beginning.

So that’s it! That was the weekend in movies! Maybe next week we can make bets on what’ll be top dog next. Discuss what you thought about this weekend at the box office in the comments and don’t forget to like, share, and follow Sprom for more news on the box office each weekend and other things in the world of movie news.
