Happy Friday! The weekend is fast approaching (and thank God it is), so that means it’s time for another Box Office Battle. This weekend is one I actually thought would be pretty good but maybe not. Here’s why:
Director: James Ponsoldt
Stars: Tom Hanks, Emma Watson, John Boyega, Patton Oswalt
Genre: Drama, Sci-fi, Thriller
Summary: A woman lands a dream job at a powerful tech company called the Circle, only to uncover a nefarious agenda that will affect the lives of her friends, family and that of humanity. (IMDB)
Rotten Tomatoes: 21%
I figured I’d start off with a movie that I was really intrigued by and almost excited about. Not GOTG Vol. 2 excited, but excited. I mean this movie has a really great cast. Emma Watson is just coming off the record breaking Beauty and the Beast, John Boyega is a star in one of the biggest film franchises of all time, and Tom Hanks and Patton Oswalt are the epitome of awesome. And yet this movie has a staggeringly low 21% on Rotten Tomatoes. That’s numbers you expect for Phoenix Forgotten, not a movie with some of the awesomest people in Hollywood. I think I’m still gonna see it, just to see what went wrong, but I am really bummed about this. I’m not super familiar with the director, so that doesn’t help me discern what exactly went wrong. Sigh. But I have heard the book is much better, if that’s any consolation for anyone else looking forward to this movie.
How to Be a Latin Lover
Director: Ken Marino
Stars: Salma Hayek, Eugenio Derbez, Rob Lowe, Kristen Bell, Raphael Alejandro
Summary: Finding himself dumped after 25 years of marriage, a man who made a career of seducing rich older women must move in with his estranged sister, where he begins to learn the value of family. (IMDB)
Rotten Tomatoes: 43%
Now this is a movie I have mixed feelings about. Originally I thought this movie was something lame and not worth my time, but then I saw the trailer. Now it wasn’t groundbreaking or anything, but I enjoyed it. This looks like a fun little thing that’ll do well enough (even with a 43% on Rotten Tomatoes).
Director: JD Dillard
Stars: Jacob Latimore, Seychelle Gabriel, Dule Hill, Storm Reid
Genre: Action, Drama, Sci-fi
Summary: A young street magician (Jacob Latimore) is left to care for his little sister after their parents passing, and turns to illegal activities to keep a roof over their heads. When he gets in too deep, his sister is kidnapped, and he is forced to use his magic and brilliant mind to save her. (IMDB)
Rotten Tomatoes: 70%
Now for the only movie that seems like it won’t disappoint me: Sleight. This is a movie that only recently came on my radar, and honestly there are some really interesting elements. This movie has a $250,000 budget, a pretty much unknown director, an actor who was in some popular-ish films but is most memorable for his song “Like ’em All” which came out in 2010, and its about a street magician. A weird combination but apparently this movie had some good reviews coming out of Sundance, so I’m interested to see what this movie makes this weekend. Considering all the weirdness of this, I hope it does well. It’s the only movie coming out this weekend that’s actually fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, so hopefully that equates to big bucks at the box office.
Who Will Win?
Probably not Sleight, but a girl can dream.
