Captain Marvel Director Found?

It seems Marvel has found its Captain Marvel directors, and yes I said directors.

2006 Sundance Film Festival - "Half Nelson" Portraits

This just in: Marvel may have found its Captain Marvel director, or should I say directors. Variety is reporting that Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have been chosen to direct Captain Marvel. Boden and Fleck are best known for writing and directing the 2015 Drama Mississippi Grind Starring Ben Mendelsohn and Ryan Reynolds, but outside of that the pair aren’t known for much. Not that this should be worrying to anyone. Marvel has a gift for picking out talented directors that aren’t particularly well known and making them into cinematic powerhouses. They did it with the Russo brothers, they did it with James Gunn, and now they’re gonna do it with these two. Now keep in mind Marvel hasn’t yet confirmed this news, so this could be bad info. But I don’t think it is. It’s a bit too random to be fake. But until it’s official, don’t completely take it to the bank.

So thoughts on this choice? Who was your pick for directing Captain Marvel? Talk about it in the comments, and don’t forget to like, share, and follow Sprom for more news on the Captain Marvel directors and other things in the world of movies.

Captain Marvel is set to hit theaters in March 8th, 2019.

Carrie Fisher Dies at the Age of 60

October 21st, 1956 – December 27th, 2016

It is with great displeasure that I announce that the great Carrie Fisher has passed away at the age of 60. Best known for her portrayal of Princess Leia Organa in the Star Wars franchise, Fisher was a beloved figure in pop culture as well as in geek culture for the past several decades. While Leia was likely her most well known role, Fisher was always active in the film world, even up until her death.

Four days ago the public learned that on a flight from London to Los Angeles Fisher suffered from cardiac arrest. While she was announced to be stable in condition just two days later, it seems that did not last for long. Earlier this morning a family spokesman announced the following on behalf of Fisher’s daughter:

“It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning. She was loved by the world, and she will be missed profoundly.”

Carrie Fisher was born into the entertainment world. The daughter of singer Eddie Fisher and actress Debbie Reynolds, Fisher was destined for a world in the spotlight. Though Fisher was quite the bookworm in her early days, she never finished high school due to the demanding requirements of the stage.  She starred in the Broadway revival Irene alongside her mother and not long after she got the gig as Princess Leia in A New Hope.

Along with her immense fame from the Star Wars franchise there was also hardship. Fisher struggled with addiction in her youth as well as her parents divorce when she was a young child. These struggles were in time revealed in full in her many books and her memoir Wishful Drinking. In her later years, Fisher became a well known advocate for mental health awareness.

Carrie Fisher was an icon and a treasure. The fact that I and many other newfound Star Wars fans will never meet this wonderous woman is a point of great sorrow. I give my deepest condolences to the Fisher family and to all those who loved Carrie Fisher. She will be missed.

Donald Glover Cast as Young Lando Calrissian in Han Solo Movie

[Danger: Contains one big spoiler I probably could exclude but I don’t want to. But you should’ve seen The Force Awakens by now anyway]

Almost a year ago Star Wars came back with a vengeance with the record smashing Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens. Revitalizing the Star Wars brand, The Force Awakens helped a new generation fall in love with the classic film franchise and because of that Lucasfilm is doing all it can to milk us of our hard earned cash create a variety of quality programming for us to enjoy for years to come. So along with the main movies with Rey and Finn and the whole gang, there are to be a set of anthology movies that come out in between the main movies. The first of these anthology films (which are technically called Star Wars Stories but that sounds weird and less intense) is Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (See what I mean?) which comes out this December 16th.It will definitely be something interesting, but right now most people are paying attention to what’s to come after.

That’s right, the next anthology film to come out will be a young Han Solo movie. I say this as if it is news, but if you know Star Wars you know this. But let us recap some important details. First off, the movie is to be directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Those are the guys behind successes like The Lego Movie and the Jump Street franchise, so this will surely be awesome. Secondly, Chewie will be in this film, so that’s bomb. And lastly, Alden Ehrenreich is to play the iconic role of Han Solo. While no one will ever replace Harrison lando-lando-calrissian-25600632-400-500Ford in the role, I think this could maybe be a good choice. I barely remember Beautiful Creatures but he was probably good in it.

Now for the actual news (drum roll please) … Donald Glover has been cast as young Lando Calrissian in the young Han Solo movie!!!! This is awesome news. In August it was rumored that Glover was at the top of the list to play Lando but now it’s been made official. Unlike Ehrenreich, I am very familiar with the works of Donald Glover. I knew him for his comedy and his rap career before I knew him as an actor, but after seeing him in things like The Martian and his new show on FX, Atlanta,  I know that when he’s in something it’s worth watching. He’s a great comedic actor but the man can be serious when he needs to be. Just look at him and look at Lando and tell me you can’t see him playing the man. It really is casting as its finest.

So are you as excited as I am? What do you think Lando’s role will be in the movie? Talk about it in the comments and don’t forget to like, share, and follow Sprom for more news on the young Han Solo movie and other things in the world of movie news.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story comes out December 16th and will be followed by Star Wars Episode 8 on December 15th, 2017. The young Han Solo movie will hit theaters sometime in 2018.

Turner Acquires the Film TV Rights for Star Wars

A long time ago in a galaxy I like to call 1977 (that’s basically a whole different galaxy) a movie came out that changed cinema forever. That movie was A New Hope, the first Star Wars movie to ever hit the big screen. Within the next 6 years the Star Wars movies grew into a phenomenon never before seen in the film world. I changed lives and made nerds out of many a young man and woman in its short time on the big screen. But of course they couldn’t leave well enough alone which gave us the prequel trilogy. Let’s just say that wasn’t received very well. But now the Star Wars train is chugging at full speed again with its newest trilogy in the works, accompanied by several animated cartoons that are indeed canon. So long story short it’s a good time to be a Star Wars nerd, and it’s about to get even better.tnt-logo-01

Turner acquire the film TV rights to Star Wars. I know what you’re thinking, why does this affect me? What even is Turner? Well I’ll tell you. Are you familiar with the channel TNT? Well that first T just so happens to stand for Turner. GASP. For those of you still not getting this, I’ll spell it out. You will soon be able to watch Star Wars on TNT, which is great (assuming you haven’t already cut the cord). I mean, have you ever seen a Star Wars movie just on TV? I haven’t, but that sounds like a life I wanna live. And I will be soon
enough. And to ice that awesomeness cake, Starting September 20 there will be a marathon of the original six installments in the Star Wars franchise and they’ll do it again in December leading up to the release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. So I guess I know what I’m doing next week.

c9987f44b39e6f9a1faf7188a38936d4-650-80As for the newest films in the franchise, don’t fret. Turner got those too in the deal, but you won’t be seeing them for a little bit. The Force Awakens won’t become Turner’s until early 2018 thanks to a deal Lucasfilm made with Stars, and as for the movies that have not yet come out each will be able to come on tv around three years after their release. I know it’s a bummer but this is kind of standard issue. But don’t fret, you can still see Rogue One a gazillion times in theaters in a few months and then just feed on that.

So how excited are you? Are you wishing you didn’t cut that cord? Talk about it in the comments and don’t forget to like, share, and follow Sprom for more news on Star Wars and other things in the world of movie news.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story comes to theaters December 16th of this year.

Zendaya’s True ‘Spiderman: Homecoming’ Character Revealed?

Before the dawn of this great era of superhero films few people knew about the heroes of DC and Marvel lore. Of the hundreds of characters created over the decades only a few were known by the common man, and one of these characters is Spiderman. Most commonly known to be the alter ego of mild mannered high school student Peter Parker, Spiderman used the abilities given to him by his mutated DNA to fight crime. When the superhero genre was slowly becoming a thing Spiderman really came into the global consciousness with the 2002 movie Spiderman. With Tobey Maguire playing our friendly neighborhood Spiderman, all the actors from this first franchise became what most people envisioned when they thought Spiderman. In this first film iteration of Spiderman we got to see the wily redhead Mary Jane Watson. The girl next door and the love of Peter’s life, Mary Jane became known for her fiery red hair and her eventual relationship with Peter. Alas that didn’t work out in Spiderman 3, but it seems Mary Jane may be getting another shot at the big screen in the form of Zendaya.

Popular Disney actress Zendaya (Best known for playing Rocky in the Disney Channel series Shake it Up) was cast several months ago in the role of Michelle. The character was given no background but it was speculated that she was to play a version of the character Michelle Gonzalez, who in the comics was Peter’s roommate and love interest. But now according to mary-jane-watson_article_story_largeThe Wrap, Zendaya will be in fact taking up the mantel of Mary Jane Watson in this newest iteration. Now no offense to Umberto Gonzalez or The Wrap, but there is still a possibility that this is not exactly the truth. No one at Sony or Marvel has confirmed or denied these statements, so the validity of these statements is still unclear.

But if Zendaya is Mary Jane, is that a good or bad thing? This is Zendaya’s first major motion picture and she’s to play one of the most beloved characters in Spidey lore? Hopefully she just got stuck in the Disney world and that’s why this is her first movie out. But as for some of the arguments on her not looking like Mary Jane, I know the red hair is iconic but give it a rest. As long as she has the ability to embody the character then it doesn’t matter if she has red hair or brown.

So did you predict this happening? Do you think the reports are legit? Is the red hair really necessary? Talk about it in the comments and don’t forget to like, share, and follow Sprom for more news on Spiderman: Homecoming and other things in the world of movie news.

Spiderman: Homecoming comes to theaters July 7th, 2017.

Brie Larson Officially Cast as Captain Marvel

Ever since the lineup was first set for phase four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe the Captain Marvel movie has been up in the air. With no info on what it would entail and how this would be woven into the current landscape of the MCU. However it was so far away we just had to wait and see. While it was set farther back to make room for the addition of Spidey and Ant-Man sequel, it grows closer and closer upon us every day. We got less than three years now and while to the average film fan that may seem like a while, this is close enough to announce who will be playing the titular character of the coming film.

Most recent Oscar winner for best actress, Brie Larson, has been officially cast as the Captain Marvel of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This has been assumed by many for a mv5bmjm4mzaxoti5nv5bml5banbnxkftztgwmzmznta4nje-_v1_uy317_cr20214317_al_while now but in Hall H today it was officially announced that Brie would take up the mantel of the superhero. Larson was always front runner for the slor so I’m sure Marvel is very happy with themselves. As for Brie Larson’s career, it’ll be interesting to see where this leads her. She has only recently become a public name and has already won her first Oscar. So maybe this means she’s gonna stick with some fun Marvel movies and save the other Room type movies for later.

So is this what you were hoping for? Who was your pick for Captain Marvel? How bummed are you that you aren’t at Comic Con? Talk about it in the comments and don’t forget to like, share, and follow Sprom for more news on Captain Marvel and other things in the world of movie news.

Captain Marvel comes to theaters March 8th, 2019.

After ‘Incredibles 2’, Pixar Doesn’t Have Any Sequels on the Books Anytime Soon

Pixar is at the top of its game and rocking it. With Finding Dory ruling the box office for the third time in three weekends, there’s no doubt in my mind that they know what they’re doing. Known for fun family classics like Ratatouille, Wall-E, and Toy Story, I strongly believe Pixar is the biggest and best name in animation. And that’s something on which kids and adults both agree, what with their entertaining characters, thought-provoking stories, and life lessons that apply to any kid or kid at heart.

And the stuff Pixar has coming up is just as interesting as the stuff in the past. The most interesting of these future projects being Toy Story 4 and The Incredibles 2. Continuations of two very beloved franchises, one of these having been a while in the making. While these sequels will definitely be well appreciated, according to Pixar president Jim Morris after The Incredibles 2 in 2019 Pixar has no plans for anymore sequels anytime soon. In an interview with EW, Morris talked about the possiblities of sequels to some of our favorite films and how they decide when to make sequels.

“Most studios jump on doing a sequel as soon as they have a successful film, but our business model is a filmmaker model, and we don’t make a sequel unless the director of the original film has an idea that they like and are willing to go forward on,” Morris explains. “A sequel in some regards is even harder [than the original] because you’ve got this defined world which, on the one hand, is a leg up, and on the other hand has expectations that you can’t disappoint on.”

So he’s saying that Pixar doesn’t make sequels immediately and just to make money (although anyone who saw Cars 2 may disagree), they only do it when the time is right. That sounds like a pretty good model.

Morris says, “Everything after Toy Story and The Incredibles is an original right now.” Following The Incredibles 2 in 2019, Pixar’s next two films — currently listed on Disney’s release schedule for March and June of 2020, respectively — are both originals, independent of one another but both of which take place in “unusual but believable worlds that take us in even other directions than we’ve pursued in the past.” Following those two, Morris says, are two more original films in early development that aren’t dated on the studio’s schedule yet but are “highly likely.” No other sequels are planned at the moment, Morris says.

So it seems Inside Out 2 won’t be coming anytime. However this isn’t exactly a bad thing. All of our favorite Pixar movies were original properties (excluding Toy Story 2 3) and those became classics.

“Pete Docter [who directed Inside Out] has an original idea for his next film. Brad Bird, being the director of Ratatouille, is working on The Incredibles and we haven’t really spoken about [a sequel to] that. And WALL-E is close to my heart since I produced it,” says Morris, who shepherded the 2008 film with director Andrew Stanton. “It would be good to back and visit that world and let everybody know that the humans actually survived again after getting back to their burnt-out planet. But that was really a love story that had its beginning, middle, and end, so we’re not really planning any further stories in those worlds at this point.”

So here’s some more specific information on some fan favorites, but from this it seems after 2019 it’ll be a bit before we see any Pixar sequels on the big screen.

So are cool with more original properties? Or are you still holding out for your favorite PIxar movie to get a sequel and soon? Talk about it in the comments and don’t forget to like, share, and follow Sprom for more news on the coming Pixar movies and other things in the world of movie news.

Luckily we have a bit before the sequel train stops. Finding Dory is in theaters right now. Cars 3 comes to theaters June 16th, 2017 (unfortunately). Toy Story 4 comes to theaters June 15th, 2018.And the Incredibles 2 comes to theaters June 21st, 2019.
