DCEU’s All-Female Villains Movie to be Called ‘Gotham City Sirens’; David Ayer to Direct

While Suicide Squad wasn’t exactly a critical darling it did have its moments, and if you ask around about what people’s favorite part of many people will say is the characters. Well, more specifically Harley Quinn. This being the first live action film adaptation of the character, Margot Robbie pretty much knocked it out of the park. When that movie ended most people were thinking “What’s next for Harley?” and the studio picked up on that. So not long after the movie came out it was revealed that a Harley Quinn spinoff was in the works. As time went on we got more details about the project, one being that it could star several famous female villains for a Birds of Prey type of movie. Well we have some more official news that confirms this and a bit more.

The Harley Quinn spin-off has officially evolved into a movie of female villainesses 635267fd1f83ae1c99ad9da6bb3cfe86called Gotham City Sirens. David Ayer will be returning to direct this spin-off, which can be taken as good or bad depending on your feelings about Suicide Squad. For those who thought Suicide Squad was a glorified music video may be dismayed by this news. However for those who either did not think that or loved the movie for what is was should be pretty okay with this news. And the title is a pretty cool one, so that’s one more plus. It’s likely derived from the DC comics series Sirens, which stars the famous villainesses Harley Quinn, Catwoman, and Poison Ivy. It is unclear is these are the villains they will be focusing on, only Harley is a sure bet. There is no word on the movie’s plot or if any heroes will be appearing in the villain-centric picture.

For those whdeadshot_empire_cover_png_by_messypandas-d9fdc79o are more interested in the other members of the Squad, don’t fear. Suicide Squad 2 is still in development, along with a Deadshot spin-off. GCS is just the furthest along, which isn’t a surprise considering how much everyone loved Harley. This does seem like an interesting idea, however for the whole of the DCEU I don’t know where this is gonna fit in. I wouldn’t seem to follow the storyline set in place so far. This sounds like a
nice one-shot, but just doesn’t work in the DCEU right now. What they need to do is keep focused on the main storyline they have right now. I doubt Gotham CIty Sirens connects to Justice League Part 2 in some big and influential way. But who knows? Maybe they got it all worked out. Maybe…

So do you think they’re finally on the right track? Should the DCEU just focus on the path they’re on rather than deviating? Is Harley Quinn overrated? Talk about it in the comments and don’t forget to like, share, and follow Sprom for more news on Gotham City Sirens and other things in the world that is movie news.

Gotham City Sirens doesn’t have a set date yet, but we’ll be on the lookout for it.

‘Aquaman’ Gets Pushed Back

The DCEU has been working and working to catch up to the other superhero powerhouses of the age, and they’ve for the most part missed the mark. Their movies have been noted for being general messes that tend to divide their audience into those who hate it with a passion or love it with equal passion. This was evident with their third film, Suicide Squad, which came out this Summer to the admiration or disappointment its audience. But somehow this universe that just can’t seem to get the superhero movie right still has many waiting anxiously for the next installment. With Wonder Woman only months away now and Justice League not long after, the DCEU is something we’re all still crossing our fingers for, and this news may bum you out but it may be for the best.

Aquaman has been moved off its date of July 27th, 2018 to October 5th, 2018. It is unclear why this move has been made for a movie that is still so far off. One plausible theory is to move the film away from Mission Impossible 6. Let’s face it, those movies have had quite a bit more success in the moolah department than the DCEU films. No need for Tom Cruise mv5byjmyzjzmzjitzjywmc00mzqzlwjjymutmji4zdayzdnjyje3xkeyxkfqcgdeqxvymzy0nta5ndu-_v1_uy268_cr1470182268_al_dipping into the DCEU’s money pool. As of right now Aquaman has no competition in its new slot, and October isn’t so bad. I mean as of right now the DCEU films haven’t been doing too well, so why throw it into a Summer that will surely be packed? Not to mention even with khal Drogo himself playing the title role there is still the prejudices attached to Aquaman and in turn an Aquaman movie. They seem to be trying to avoid risk. But as earlier stated, this movie doesn’t come out for almost two years. If the response to him in Justice League is better than expected they might just movie it back up.

So what do you think? Is this a good or bad sign? Do you think Jason Momoa can carry a movie? Is Aquaman just a sea-nerd? Talk about it in the comments and don’t forget to like, share, and follow Sprom for more news on Aquaman and everything else in the movie world.

Aquaman comes to US theaters October 5th, 2018. It is directed by James Wan and will star Jason Momoa as the title character, as well as Amber Heard as Mera and Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko.

‘Fantastic Beasts’Trilogy Becomes a Quintilogy?

Ever since June 30th, 1997 the muggle world has a been a bit more magical. Kids grew up with tales of witchcraft and wizardry that took over popular culture. And then (for those of us who were never readers) there came the Harry Potter movies. If the world hadn’t caught on to the HP craze by then it was sure joining in after seeing those movies. Those books and movies changed a generation, and when they both came to a close the world started to seem a bit less … magical. But that’s all gonna change very soon thanks to a little thing I like to call Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

This fast coming new addition to the Harry Potter Universe is set to be something very interesting. Set in New York during the early 1900’s, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is connected to Harry and his pals in only the smallest ways. Just because we’re returning to the world of HP doesn’t mean we are returning to our pals unfortunately. But maybe all is not lost. Maybe this Scamander character will be enough to fill that whole in our hearts. And if he is, WB is gonna be making some bank soon enough.

That’s right, the alleged Fantastic Beasts trilogy has been lengthened to a quintilogy (don’t know if that’s an actual term but you’re smart, you’ll figure out the meaning). At a fan event in London on Thursday it was revealed that there will in fact be five movies in the franchised rather than just three. According to Rowling, “We always knew that it was going to be more than one movie — we knew that from the start — so we set a trilogy as a sort of placeholder, because we knew there would be more than one movie. But I’ve now done the plotting properly, so we’re pretty sure it’s going to be five movies.” So you’ve heard it from the creator’s mouth herself. Five movies, the first of which is coming out in a little over a month. Starring Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne was Newt Scamander and other fan favorites like Colin firth, this movie is gonna be something to watch out for.

So what do you think? Is this Hollywood trying to milk you of your hard earned cash or is this the real deal? Will the world ever feel as magical as it did in those early days of Harry Potter? Talk about it in the comments and don’t forget to like, share, and follow Sprom for more news on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and other things in the world of movie news.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them comes to US theaters November 18th, 2016.

Joe Manganiello to Play Deathstroke in DCEU’s Batman Solo Film

joe-manganiello-435 deathstroke_vol_2_8

It has been exciting few weeks for the DC fans of the world. Just over a week ago Ben Affleck gave us the heads up that Deathstroke would be the main villain in the Batman solo movie set to come out in 2018, which sparked a lot of excitement for me and anyone else who is a fan of Arrow or the original Teen Titans cartoon. Deathstroke (aka Slade Wilson) is one of the more known of the unknown DC villains thanks to this popular tv shows. So that news was already something to get me looking forward to 2018, but this is just icing on the cake.

According to The Washington Journal Joe Manganiello has been cast as Deathstroke in this newest iteration. This news came from the mouth of DC executive Geoff Johns himself, so you can take this to the bank. You may recognize this dashing man from the series True Blood and the Magic Mike franchise. Of all the names I heard for this role, Joe’s was the one I most often heard thrown around. So I’m sure quite a few people are having a pretty good day today.

Johns declined to answer if Manganiello’s Deathstroke would make some kind of appearance in the Justice League movie we have coming up soon, however Mr. Manganiello just so happened to be in London not far from where they are shooting so …. Do with that information what you will.

So are you pumped this casting choice? Or did you have someone else in mind? Talk about it in the comments and don’t forget to like, share, and follow Sprom for more news on Deathstroke and other things in the world of movie news.

Zendaya’s True ‘Spiderman: Homecoming’ Character Revealed?

Before the dawn of this great era of superhero films few people knew about the heroes of DC and Marvel lore. Of the hundreds of characters created over the decades only a few were known by the common man, and one of these characters is Spiderman. Most commonly known to be the alter ego of mild mannered high school student Peter Parker, Spiderman used the abilities given to him by his mutated DNA to fight crime. When the superhero genre was slowly becoming a thing Spiderman really came into the global consciousness with the 2002 movie Spiderman. With Tobey Maguire playing our friendly neighborhood Spiderman, all the actors from this first franchise became what most people envisioned when they thought Spiderman. In this first film iteration of Spiderman we got to see the wily redhead Mary Jane Watson. The girl next door and the love of Peter’s life, Mary Jane became known for her fiery red hair and her eventual relationship with Peter. Alas that didn’t work out in Spiderman 3, but it seems Mary Jane may be getting another shot at the big screen in the form of Zendaya.

Popular Disney actress Zendaya (Best known for playing Rocky in the Disney Channel series Shake it Up) was cast several months ago in the role of Michelle. The character was given no background but it was speculated that she was to play a version of the character Michelle Gonzalez, who in the comics was Peter’s roommate and love interest. But now according to mary-jane-watson_article_story_largeThe Wrap, Zendaya will be in fact taking up the mantel of Mary Jane Watson in this newest iteration. Now no offense to Umberto Gonzalez or The Wrap, but there is still a possibility that this is not exactly the truth. No one at Sony or Marvel has confirmed or denied these statements, so the validity of these statements is still unclear.

But if Zendaya is Mary Jane, is that a good or bad thing? This is Zendaya’s first major motion picture and she’s to play one of the most beloved characters in Spidey lore? Hopefully she just got stuck in the Disney world and that’s why this is her first movie out. But as for some of the arguments on her not looking like Mary Jane, I know the red hair is iconic but give it a rest. As long as she has the ability to embody the character then it doesn’t matter if she has red hair or brown.

So did you predict this happening? Do you think the reports are legit? Is the red hair really necessary? Talk about it in the comments and don’t forget to like, share, and follow Sprom for more news on Spiderman: Homecoming and other things in the world of movie news.

Spiderman: Homecoming comes to theaters July 7th, 2017.

‘Aquaman’ Villain revealed

Ever since the first superhero comics were created DC has been on top. Marvel may be at the top of its game now but there’s a reason that when you thought of heroes before the MCU became a thing the first characters that came to mind were Superman and Batman. DC’s characters were the most well known and almost all of them were the most well loved. Alas, there was one misfit hero that saved the day but still got teased by every kid on the playground: Aquaman. It’s hard not to make fun of him. I mean talking to fish isn’t exactly the coolest power. Do fish really have anything important to say? But it’s not his fault, he was just born that way. And throughout his long history he has survived the torment of his peers and by his fans is seen as a legit superhero, and I have a feeling in a few years we’ll see as that as well.

mv5byjmyzjzmzjitzjywmc00mzqzlwjjymutmji4zdayzdnjyje3xkeyxkfqcgdeqxvymzy0nta5ndu-_v1_uy268_cr1470182268_al_Why? Because of Jason Momoa of course! More affectionately known as Khal Drogo, former husband to our favorite Khaleesi, Jason Momoa is helping to legitimize that character that is Aquaman. Come November of next year we will see for ourselves how badass the King of Atlantis can be, but him brooding in Justice league‘s Comic Con trailer should be enough to stop us from bullying the character again. And by the time his solo movie comes along surely we will all be on the Aquaman bandwagon, so in preparation for then here’s some info about the villain that the waterbound wonder will be fighting.

According to TheWrap, Black Manta will be the villain in the blackmantaupcoming Aquaman solo movie. Black Manta is a man in a wetsuit with a weird helmet (as can be seen to your right) that allows him to shoot lasers from the eye holes. In the new 52 universe, which much of the DCEU and DCTV universe has drawn its inspirations from, Black Manta is responsible for the death of Aquaman’s father causing a rivalry that will surely make for something great on the silver screen.

So are you starting to think of Aquaman as the real deal? Do you think Black Manta is a good villain choice? Talk about it in the comments and don’t forget to like, share, and follow Sprom for more news on the Aquaman solo movie and other things in the world of movie news.

Justice League Part 1 comes to theaters November 17th, 2017. The Aquaman solo movie comes to theaters July 27th, 2018. I know, so far away. But if you feel like you need some DCEU in your life right now, why not go see Suicide Squad? Click here for a look at Sprom’s non-spoiler review of the movie to get a taste and see if you want more.

Suicide Squad Non-Spoiler Review

This is another rare but hopefully appreciated Sprom review! This review is over the third movie in the DCEU Suicide Squad. This movie being the first movie in this new DC universe to not be directed by Zack Snyder, it had a lot to prove. And I think for the most part they came out a success. This movie is an even that begs to be seen in theaters. I left the theater opening night feeling like I was walking on air. I adored this movie. Let’s talk about why.

Let’s start with the characters. This was the thing that pulled us all in: the unique characters that get pushed together in order to save the world. The standouts were (no surprise here) Harley Quinn, Deadshot, and Amanda Waller. This is Will Smith at his finest. His performance as a deadly assassin and a loving father was so good it almost made me forget about Men in Black 3. Almost. As always, Viola Davis’ performance as Waller was bad ass. And Margot Robbie was extraordinary as Harley Quinn. She embodies the crazy that is Harley Quinn in just the right way. I had a feeling she would be my favorite character in this movie, but she’s definitely top five at least in all of the DCEU thus far. Special mention goes to Jai Courtney’s character Captain Boomerang. He took a character that seemed so ridiculous and made him into a loveable douchebag. As for the disappointments one is surprisingly Katana. She turns out to be different than the trailers led me to believe. She kinda felt thrown in. so that was definitely a bummer. And it was made such a big thing when it was made known that Common and Scott Eastwood were gonna be in the movie. I thought they would be more relevant. I thought wrong. I mean they weren’t bad, they just weren’t important. And speaking of relevant, Slipknot is as relevant as you think is he is .

Now on to the man who gets his own paragraph. The one, the only, the Joker. I do confess that I’ve never seen any other Batman movie excluding Batman v Superman, making this my first Joker. And he sure does not disappoint. This man … he is brilliant. Jared Leto is my Joker. maybe my only Joker. I don’t think I need any more in my life. He takes the man that I’ve heard and read about so much and brings him to life in a way I never could’ve expected. While he ends up being more of a mob boss than a comic book villain, but I think basing him in a kind of reality that gives him any needed resources and the ability to be as insane as he is was the perfect way to portray him. As for the romance that is Joker and Harley, this is portrayed brilliantly in Suicide Squad. Two crazy lovebirds just trying to do whatever they want while destroying anyone in their way. The classic fairytale. And they really are in love, which is the best part. After seeing this movie there is no doubt in my mind that they are the definition of the perfect couple. I’m ready to see this man on the big screen in the near future.

Now on to some more troubling this. While I did adore this movie, it is not without its problems. One thing that kind of bugged me is that the Suicide Squad wasn’t really much of a team. I get that villains aren’t usually team players, however I feel they didn’t come together as much as I thought they could’ve. It felt like more of a group of singular characters rather than a team. Another thing is how they got some of the needed backstory. Some of the backstory stuff fit in just fine, but near the end it felt like stuff got wedged into to make sure that the ending made sense.

Now on to happier things: the soundtrack! This movie’s soundtrack is a gift from the gods. In the movie the songs worked so well and didn’t even make me want an orchestral score, and anyone who’s seen my reviews knows I love a good orchestral score. The best part is this is the kinda soundtrack you listen to all the time. It works in and out of the theater. I’m listening to it right now and these songs are all so great. Even the Panic! At The Disco cover of Bohemian Rhapsody (although Freddie Mercury is still #1). My favorite songs are Purple Lamborghini, You Don’t Own Me, and I started a Joke.

This movie is a must watch for DC fans and casual moviegoers alike. It’s an enjoyable action packed thrill ride that will encourage so many young girls to want to dress up as Harley for Halloween. Trust me on this, this mixture of amazing characters and supernatural weirdness is worth the cost of admission.

P.S. The mid credits scene is sorta important, but a total snoozefest. Dropping the ball DC.

When are you seeing Suicide Squad? Will you be dressing up as Harley come Halloween? Talk about it in the comments and don’t forget to like, share, and follow Sprom for more reviews and other fun stuff in the world of movie news.
